There is perhaps an easier way of looking at the job of family doctors. They may see patients of all ages for most basic illnesses and for preventative care. When care becomes complex, these doctors usually refer the patient to a specialist who is more adept at handling difficult medical matters. Family doctors may continue to coordinate care and usually the specialist keeps this doctor informed of any medical procedures or choices made.

Patients looking for a primary care physician might wonder if there would be a huge difference between choosing a family medical practitioner and a general practitioner. Actually there could be. Given the extensive additional training of the family medical practitioner, it would be reasonable to assume that most of these doctors are more equipped to handle patients of diverse age ranges through most common illnesses and for the majority of preventative care. This does not mean that a skilled general practitioner is by any means incapable of caring for patients, but the "family doctor" certainly has more training.

Different countries may define family doctors in various ways and may construct training programs that are widely varied. Within each country, people looking for a doctor can evaluate by which standards a person is judged a family doctor or a general practitioner. When doctors decide to practice in a country different from the one in which they were trained they may need to fulfill additional requirements prior to obtaining licensure.

These days it seems there are far too many claims that a particular herbal supplement can do many extraordinary things that not even doctors can figure out. The people selling these ‘miracle drugs’ attempt to impulse you straight to your pocket book…and succeed every day. Fortunately, there are ways to protect yourself from fraudulent claims and purchasing products that actually provide you the real ingredients of what you thought you were buying. There are two major organizations that have made it their job to validate the alternative supplements and allowing the placement of their stamp of approval on the approved products. These two organizations are the United States Pharmacopoeia and NSF International.

One piece of advice: never buy anything that claims to be an alternative treatment without first finding this stamp of approval. Why risk it? it is these organizations jobs to seek out and approve all the products that actually follow through with what they say. So if the stamp is not there, then it may very well mean that it has not been approved. That being said, there are many products out there seeking their approval but some have really managed to stand out as some of the more effective alternative medicines, thanks to the research done at universities such ad Harvard, Duke, and Stanford. These universities have been making it one of their main goals to research and find what herbal remedies really work and how. Several years of research have already been conducted and many alternative medicine practices have been deemed as effective.

Some of those effective alternative medicines include: acupuncture for pain, guided imagery (focusing on breathing and relaxation while taking the patient to another ‘place’), as well as glucosamine for joint pain. Also mentioned were alternative treatments for PMS using such supplements as calcium, magnesium, and vitamin B6 which all can have an impact on bloating and other strong effects of one’s period. For depression, it has been validated that St Johns Wort has evidence of it’s effectiveness for reducing the symptoms. However, those taking the supplement will more than likely not see any effect until after six to 8 weeks.

So when you hear the claims that a certain herb will cure those things which man has not been able to figure out after all the decades of research, maybe it would be a good idea to do a little of your own research. Find a valid practitioner who can assist you in finding the right alternative medicines and treatments which would be best for you. Valid practitioners are those who have actually studied alternative medicine and are included in the Consortium for Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine and who have a background in alternative medicine. If you do not seek professional advice, then make sure you look for the “USP” of “NSF” stamps of approval on the products before making your purchase.

I think that is wonderful but it hardly serves as proof. I want to see some sort of hard evidence. The ideal would be a randomized, double blind, placebo controlled trial. Nursing is a challenging profession in that you will be entrusted with the responsibility of providing adequate care and assistance to the patient and ensuring that the patient is cured of the disease and returns back to normalcy.

Nurses account for more than 50% of the total employment in the health care industry. Without the active services of the nurses in all fields, the doctors cannot function effectively.

The role of the nurses in a hospital or a nursing home is two-fold. They are responsible to provide all possible assistance to the patients and help in effective cure of the ailment. They should record the problems of the patient, provide medication at periodic intervals, note down the developments in the disease, make the patient feel comfortable and above all, provide a sense of satisfaction and confidence to the patient suffering from the disease.

The nurse is also responsible to explain the problem, the findings and the inconveniences of the patient to the doctor, carry out the instructions of the doctor and also record the developments at periodic intervals. Understanding this basic concept and acting in line with the responsibilities in a professional manner will be the key to eliminating the rift between the two, and the subsequent feeling of having to work with a difficult doctor.

Another important thing that both the doctor and the nurse should realize is that without their effective contribution, the hospital cannot function effectively and bring the required revenue for the hospital. However efficient the doctor may be with many degrees and specializations, the patients might not come if the nurses do not extend proper care to the patient. Similarly, doctors should also realize the importance of the nurses and their effective role in attracting patients and providing best possible treatment. Mutual respect among the doctor and the nurse and effective execution of the professional responsibilities is the key for a successful partnership and teamwork in the hospital.

Herbs and nutritional supplements came in a distant second with a little over 50,600 times people said they had used that as an alternative medicine in the last year. Rounding out the top five includes chiropractic, deep breathing exercise, and meditation.

There are several alternative medicine methods out there that can help everything from treatment, prevention and a release of stress. These natural treatments allow a person to soothe themselves from any tension and relax. It is clear from the 2002 study that you are not the only one interested in or using alternative medicines. Alternative medicine is defined as any form of medical treatment that is different from conventional treatments. Homeopathy

The word homeopathy comes from the Greek for "similar disease" or "similar suffering." Homeopathy is not just about administering different medications than the traditional prescription drugs given by doctors. It is also about diagnosing and classifying different medical conditions to find the best treatment possible for the patient.

The goal of this type of alternative medicine is to enable the body to use its own mechanisms to stimulate healing and prevent diseases from occurring. Homeopathic medicines are called remedies. These remedies are usually given in small doses. Practitioners work to tailor a treatment plan for each individual to gain the maximum benefits. They concentrate on the body as a whole, and not just treating the symptoms that ail the patient.

Naturopathy

Naturopathic medicine was founded in India and works on the basis that the body can heal itself. To this end, naturopathic practitioners steer clear of synthetic medicines and invasive surgical procedures as a means to heal their patients. Instead, they opt to combine other alternative medical treatments, such as herbalism, acupuncture, and aromatherapy, as well as others. This type of alternative medicine is practiced in many countries, but is not always accepted because of its varying standards of regulation.

Reputable naturopathic practitioners are trained to use imaging studies and blood tests to help them get the full picture of what is wrong with a patient before administering any treatment options. They will then recommend alternative treatments for a prescribed amount of time. If the treatment does not work for the patient, a practitioner will refer the patient to a physician to obtain conventional medical care.

Chiropractics

Chiropractics is a branch of alternative medicine that deals with diagnosing and treating diseases of the musculoskeletal system, and how these diseases affect the nervous system. Many of the procedures used in chiropractics emphasize manual therapy, using alignments and manipulations to correct the affected area.

A chiropractor must obtain proper training and receive a degree before beginning to work with patients. He uses a combination of measures to help heal a patient, including lifestyle counseling, a regimen of exercise, and a variety of tissue therapies. Much like naturopathy, chiropractics is based on the belief that the body can heal itself. Chiropractors help to realign areas of subluxation to help the body do its innate job.

Herbal Medicines

The basis of herbal medicines is to use plant derivatives instead of chemicals to heal diseases and prevent symptoms. People who use herbal medicines are adamant in their belief that herbs are not drugs. It is believed that by using herbal supplements on a regular basis, you can help your body ward off diseases for an ultimate healthy lifestyle. It should be warned that using herbal drugs in conjunction with prescribed medications can cause serious side effects. You should never take herbal supplements without consulting a physician first.

There are literally hundreds of herbal medicines available on the market today. Be cautious when picking which ones are right for you. Herbal medicines do not have to be tested before being marketed, so it is hard to say if they will work the same way for everyone. According to Western medical doctor a meticulous test means that the medicine should go through one or preferably more irregular double blind clinical trials. This testing process is known as the gold standard of Western medicine.

This whole process is pretty expensive plus includes highly qualified researchers, an authentic research methodology, a couple of patients to test, plus a long period of time to observe results. Well the doctors are not right in saying this. Because alternative medicine has gone through rigorous testing several times and in multiple ways.

Exactly, that what I am talking about? Chiropractic adjustments are being tested. Then massage has been tested. Acupuncture. Yoga. Reiki. Reflexology. Herbs. Vitamin therapy. You name any alternative therapy; they all are being tested, and that to may be a lot of times.

I am wondering how you guys haven't heard such results. Let me tell without any favoritism, that there is not even a single corporation that takes such published studies into account or benefit from it; it's only left to the general public usually to read medical journals when they are formerly published. There are few astonishing example I would like to share with you.

Clinical and Laboratory Research in August 2003, this was actually a study published in the medical journal Multiple Sclerosis that few researchers estimated the effects of reflexology on reducing the symptoms of multiple sclerosis.

They figured out unbelievable results. Reflexology lessen the patients symptoms with paresthesias (burning, prickling, itching, tingling), urinary symptoms and spasticity (uncontrollable spasms). And this was contrasted to a control group that received a form of fake reflexology.

Similar to this another study shows that was published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry in July 2002, that aromatherapy is quite helpful to patients suffering from acute dementia. Alternative medicine can be described as a medical treatment that rejects conventional medicine and follows other courses of action. For more and more people for whom traditional medicine has not produced the desired results or for those who consciously select to follow complementary and alternative medicine practices in comparison to traditional health ones, alternative remedies have come to the rescue. In fact, according to multiple studies, an outstanding one in three of all adults in the US (34%) has used some kind of complementary / alternative therapy in the past year.

For the other two individuals who have not decided yet to try any therapy that belongs to this type of health practice, or are not sure if they have done so in the past, it is important to understanding what complementary and alternative therapy is and why people select to use it.

According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), complementary and alternative medicine is defined as "a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not presently considered to be part of conventional medicine." But although these types of alternative practices are not taught in medical schools or implemented by certified physicians, the highest use of complementary and alternative medicine was reported by people between 25 and 49 years of age who had relatively more education and higher incomes.

Even more overwhelming is the fact that the vast majority (83%) of those who have used one or more unconventional therapy methods for serious medical conditions also sought treatment for the same health problems from a medical doctor although 72 percent of the survey respondents did not inform their medical doctors that they had done so. Why are people afraid to admit the obvious? Is in fact complementary and alternative medicine a "sin?"

The underlying philosophy of these approaches greatly differs from conventional medicine. In general, complementary and alternative therapies are based on the body's innate ability to heal itself. By using natural methods instead of complicated conventional medical procedures, alternative health practitioners provide their healing services to those who seek to explore an unconventional therapy in addition to whatever their medical doctors have subscribed, advised or performed.

Moreover, since complementary and alternative medicine's goal is to create optimum health, it focuses on preventing disease and helping someone feel better overall. In fact, it looks at the underlying cause of the problem and addresses the issue at hand from every perspective and not just by examining the symptoms of ill health. The most well-known healing therapies belonging to the complementary and alternative medicine practice are: chiropractic, aromatherapy, massage, mind-body therapies such as deep breathing exercises and meditation, energy therapies, Yoga, traditional Chinese medicine and practices, like the age-old practice of acupuncture, homeopathy and diet therapies based on the use of herbs and nutritional supplements.

It is not smart of them to think it has an indefinite lifespan and I will consider it their fault when I get hurt or stuck. Did you know that just taking my service animal outside is me breaking a Medicare Rule called the IN HOME RESTRICTION POLICY ? It is used by Medicare to DENY wheelchair replacements while at the same time secretly inflating your costs generating income for THEM from repeated doctor visits to achieve same goal. The bad part is that Medicare has no intention of EVER using the doctors information or scripts! In 2006 Medicare created new made up Groups for wheelchairs. Mine fell into a category now called Group 4 Wheelchair and Medicare decided to no longer cover this type of wheelchair so they removed or "cross-walked" the reimbursement codes and made me a non existent person!! This means that if you have Medicare as your insurer then you can no longer purchase the type of Durable Medical Equipment your Physicians say you NEED to be SAFE! IF MEDICARE is allowed to continue with their magical medical clairvoyance people like me will no longer be able to remain independent in the community but may indeed be forced to become a ward of the state and give up rights to make medical decisions and possibly even forced into nursing care for a different easier reimbursement protocol NOT because that ...

Exercises must be considered a serious thing to include into diabetes control program. There are several ways in which exercise can help diabetes. Exercise can help in controlling your overall body weight and even in reducing blood sugar level.

It reduces your risk of heart disease. Heart diseases are quite common among people with diabetes. Exercise is also necessary to keep you feel better about your health.

When it comes to doing exercises to control diabetes, try to consult your health care practitioner. He would analyze your condition and suggest you the kind of exercise that’s right for you. The type of exercise you can perform will depend on the health problems you have.

Most doctors recommend aerobic exercises. These exercises play an important role in making you breathe deeply and making the heart work harder.

Some of the common aerobic exercises include jogging, walking, bicycling and aerobic dances. You can go for swimming and certain chair exercises.

Make sure that you drink more amount of fluids during your exercise schedule. This will keep you cool. When you feel thirsty, chances are that you may get dehydrated. This type of dehydrated can seriously affect your blood sugar level. Make sure that you intake a good amount of fluid prior to, during and after exercise.

Here are some important steps you need to follow when exercising:

a) Keep your doctor informed about your exercise schedule.

b) Let your doctor tell you about the type of exercise that will suit your health condition.

c) Always check your feet for any sort of blisters or sore on you start or finish exercise.

d) Drink plenty of fluid prior to drinking and after exercising.

e) Make sure that you wear proper shoes and socks for proper exercising.

Classifying The Types Of Alternative Medicine

Alternative medicine can be defined as any form of therapy, practice or treatment which is outside the mainstream or beyond the realm of the conventional.

More generally it can be defined as any approach or medicine which differs from conventional Western forms. Alternative medicine is often talked about in conjunction with Complementary Therapy and the umbrella term Complementary & Alternative Medicine or CAM is used.

As a general guide some of the more mainstream CAMs are acupuncture, acupuncture, aromatherapy, herbal medicine, homoeopathy, hypnotherapy, massage therapy, naturopathy, reiki, reflexology & Yoga.

Alternative medicine in the UK is growing year on year and in 2006 it generated expenditure of 1.6 billion pounds. Large numbers of people choose to seek out alternative forms of medicine subsequent to a diagnosis from their GP or other traditional route. However in the main, research shows that people tend to use CAMs in parallel with conventional medicine. There is often resistance from GPs to recommend or refer a patient to an alternative therapy where they consider empirical evidence to be limited or non-conclusive and the research methods are not always standardised as with traditional medicine. There are also often funding issues relating to onward referrals within the NHS.

However, the CAM sector is responding to this criticism by adopting the standard research methods & evidence provision in line with the medical establishments traditional methods. This is largely assisting with the rapid growth of this multi-layered industry, alongside the continually growing wealth of positive empirical evidence.

Generally speaking CAM's can be organised into five key areas, although it should be noted that there are number of areas where these overlap. These areas are -

Whole Medical Systems (WMS)

WHMS have been developed in the West - often with it roots in other medicine systems. Examples of this type of system are Naturopathy - helping or stimulating the body's own in-built healing system by improving diet & lifestyle in conjunction with other CAMs such as acupuncture and massage. A good non Western parallel to this system is Chinese Medicine as is Ayurveda which hails from India and takes the holistic approach of treating the mind body & spirit via massage, yoga, herbs & meditation.

Another WMS which developed in recent years in the West is Homeopathy the practice of stimulating the healing system of the body by delivering minute amounts of certain elements or substances which in much higher doses would be detrimental or dangerous to a patient's health.

Mind-Body Medicine (MBM)

MBM can call upon a number of techniques which are aimed at improving the symptoms & functions of the body e.g. meditation, Yoga etc. A number of therapies which historically where thought to be CAMs are now firmly placed in the mainstream such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming).

Biologically Based Practices (BBP)

BBP are derived from elements and materials which are found naturally such as vitamins for supplements, healthy foods for well being & detoxification and herbs helping with everything from pain relief to stress & weight loss. Biologically based practices in CAM use substances found in nature, such as herbs, foods, and vitamins. Some examples include dietary supplements, herbal products, and the use of other so-called natural but as yet scientifically unproven therapies (for example, using shark cartilage to treat cancer).

Manipulative and Body-Based Practices (MBBP)

MBBP work by manipulation, pressure and rubbing of soft tissues and muscles aimed at promoting repair, better health & flexibility. These type of therapy work by removing scar tissue, promoting oxygen flow and helping the removal of toxins and acids.

A number are further examples of therapies which are becoming less and less alternative and more mainstream. These include Chiropractic, Osteopathy, Massage & other body work such as Shiatsu and Sports Massage.

Energy Medicine Therapies (EMT)

EMT are believed to help the patient by tapping into the energy fields which cloak the human body and restoring balance, improving energy flow and clearing blockages. Examples of these type of therapies are Reiki, Chinese Medicine and Energy Healing.

So, why the growth in CAMs? Well, in recent years patients have gradually taken more accountability & responsibility for their health and are not as happy as maybe they once were to be told what to do or how to live. As a result they are becoming more autonomous and seeking out their own alternatives and solutions.

It is important to note they don't side step mainstream traditional medicine but seek help from CAMs to complement their treatment. Part of the reason for this empowerment is the growth of the internet and the ease of access to swathes of information, research, forums and feedback available at a click on the World Wide Web. Recent research has shown that over 60% of internet users use the web to provide answers on health related issues.

In addition to the ground swell of the general public embracing CAMs, areas of traditional medicine are adopting and recommending alternative therapies. The NHS now has as 5 hospitals offering CAMs for patients and more and more health professionals such as doctors, nurses and mid wives are training in alternative therapies to offer within their mainstream practice.

The Increasing Popularity Of Alternative Medicine

Healthcare in the western world is experiencing a major shift in how people want to be treated and the treatments they choose to undertake. Seemingly patients are increasingly open to the idea of pursuing alternative medicine rather than the medical practises of established medicine. But what is behind this shift? Why are patients choosing alternative medicine over the regular variety and what implications will this have on not only the medical profession but also society more generally?

One of the most touted reasons for the increased use of alternative medicine is the increased cost of regular treatments. While in this country we have a nationalised healthcare system, in many countries around the world medical expenses are a major concern. This is why all over the western world; those who have to pay for medical treatment are choosing the alternative route instead of the conventional one.

The reason for this increase in cost is not due to medical staff receiving more money but instead a rise in the costs of supplies and operation. That said, the end result is the same, patients have to pay more for their treatments and understandably utilising alternative forms of treatment that prove to cheaper has become popular, especially when used over a long period of time.

Even countries that use a system of personal insurance to pay for medicine and treatments are experiencing this shift towards alternative medicine. The shift is a result of the fact that for minor afflictions and problems many policies are not paying out; as the patient then has to pay for their drugs, seeking alternative and cheaper forms of treatment is wholly understandable. As long as insurers refuse to pick up the tabs for patient's bills, alternative practitioners will experience the financial benefits as people head to them in droves.

It may even reach the point where alternative medicine becomes the predominant form of treatment. Courses of naturopathy, hypnotherapy, yoga and chiropractic treatment are becoming evermore popular and challenging drugs and surgery as the primary means of treatment for a number of disorders. Doctors are already experiencing a downturn in patient numbers as they head instead to the alternative practitioners.

While this does not in itself worry doctors who are under high levels of stress already, one consequence is patients not telling their doctors of the treatments they have had for fear of disapproval. Understandably doctors want the entire picture of a patient's past treatments, alternative or regular to work out a suitable course of action.

As peoples' faith in western medicine clearly diminishes, alternative medicines are becoming popular for the relief they offer. This has worried doctors somewhat due to the fact that without a professional medical opinion it is easy to diagnose symptoms incorrectly resulting in patients undergoing treatments they do not need that could in fact harm their chances of recovery. The era of self diagnosis seems to be upon us, the ramifications of this have not yet been ascertained but if the fears of doctors are realised, a great deal of subsequent health problems may arise in the future.

The internet has played its own part in this rise of alternative medicine. As an information resource it is unrivalled but the questions remain over the quality of said information. If people continue to self-diagnose, the health implications could be great. Overall however if you are looking into using alternative medicine it is advisable to take a mixed approach. The knowledge of your doctor should not be ignored and is a far greater resource than the internet. By using this advice and finding a practitioner who is both knowledgeable and trustworthy is key to finding a healthy balance between existing treatments and alternative therapies.

Tips on How to Find the Right Doctor for Lasik Surgery

Lasik eye surgery is only as good as the doctor who performs it, even with all the new medical techniques and tools that have evolved over the past few years. A good Lasik surgeon can restore your vision to crystal clarity; an inexperienced or poor one can inflict permanent damage upon your eyes. Here are some tips on how to find the right doctor for Lasik surgery.

First, ask your eye doctor whom he or she would recommend. Get several names. Ask him or her to prioritize in terms of preference. You can also look at the myriad advertisements for Lasik doctors in your area, but don’t take their claims at face value – you’ll still need to do the legwork with them as far as research. Simply use this as a tool to gather good name candidates.

A Lasik Checklist

You’ll have to ask each professional a checklist of questions. First, what kind of surgery would they recommend for your eye, and how many of those procedures have they actually performed in their career? And more importantly, how many procedures have they performed with exactly the same equipment that they would recommend for your eyes? Many doctors have had a lot of experience with laser procedures, but not necessarily Lasik. The last thing you would want to be as a patient is a guinea pig for new or unproven equipment, whether it’s with laser or microkeratome blade.

Does the doctor seem to “push” a certain procedure over another, or not ask a lot of questions about your overall health and your goals for your vision? Beware the facility that might have financial incentives for using one procedure over another.

Next, does this medical professional FDA approved use the equipment? There are plenty of people who might advertise the newest advances in Lasik equipment, but it may in fact not have cleared government approval hurdles, and again, you do not want to be a guinea pig with something as important as your eyes.

Is the doctor informative? He or she should spend as much time with you as you need, in order to answer your questions walk you through what happens with the technique he or she uses. If the doctor is continually late for appointments, or seems rushed, you may want to consider whether this is someone who is going to give you the personal and unique attention you need. Although Lasik may be very routine to many doctors, he or she should not make you feel as though they are not taking your needs seriously, because after all, everyone’s eyes are different.

Educate Yourself Before Undergoing Lasik

Educate yourself on what your doctor candidate requires for before-care, such as what kinds of relaxants or anesthesia he or she prefers to use. A good doctor will make sure you are in good overall health, and not allergic or adverse to certain medications.

An important question to consider: what kind of long-term care does the medical professional and his or her practice provide? Will they make themselves available to follow-up care and appointments, or are they too busy to provide you with this information? It is imperative to have follow-up care to make sure your eyes have healed properly, and that the correct vision goal has been attained. Most Lasik professionals will provide this as a matter-of-course, but if your candidate seems unconcerned about being available should you have any problems after the surgery, you should probably consider looking elsewhere.

Last, ask your doctor candidates if he or she will provide you with references from Lasik patients he or she has performed laser eye surgery on in the past. Call them! And be sure to ask not just whether their vision goals were attained, but were they comfortable with the surgeon, and the entire Lasik surgery in general.
